Apr. 20--DECATUR -- A 41-year-old Decatur man is in police custody after a police chase that ended when a sport-utility vehicle smashed into a small school bus at Jasper and Condit streets Wednesday afternoon.
"He'll be going to jail as soon as he's done at the hospital," said Decatur Police Lt. Linda Hassinger.
Dennis Donald will be charged with retail theft, resisting and obstructing police, Watches for sale traffic violations and motor vehicle theft, Hassinger said.
No serious injuries were reported, but the accident left the front end of the bus and the blue SUV smashed, and crash victims were removed from the scene on stretchers.
"No students were on board, but there was obviously the driver and an attendant on board," said Dawn Torchia, community engagement specialist for Decatur schools. "Our top concern at this point is their safety, that they're OK."
Police say the two victims in the bus and the driver of the SUV were taken to Cheap A.Lange & Sohne Watches Memorial Hospital with "minor" injuries.
Decatur police pursued the suspect in the SUV eastbound on Condit Street after a holdup alarm was pulled at U-Top Beauty and Fashion in Fairview Park Plaza.
Police later discovered the alleged crime was retail theft.
The crash left neighbors shaken.
"It sounded just like a bomb exploded," one resident said of the crash.
Tire tracks gashed through a yard, and the SUV came to rest near the Cheap Alain Silberstein Watches of Macon County Health Department.
The bus lay in ruin at the intersection of Jasper and Condit.
A man interviewed by police said he heard screeching tires and saw the driver of the SUV jump out of the vehicle and run north between nearby houses.
"I thought he'd see if anybody was hurt," said the witness, who only gave his first name of Charles. "But nope. Off he went."
Police soon apprehended the driver, the witness said.
Neighbors say it's not the first high-speed chase or example of dangerous driving in the area.
Tiffany Williams saw the SUV rapidly moving east on Condit Street. The Cheap Baume & Mercier Watches was pursued by a police car with flashing lights, she said.
"It was going really fast," Williams said. "It sounded like a jet, I swear."
